Preventing Alzheimer's Disease

As the Baby Boomer generation approaches middle age and beyond, the fear of Alzheimer's Disease is as great as any other fear. This disease is one of the cruelest diseases known to man and, as of now, there is no cure. However, there are plenty of things we can do to prevent Alzheimer's Disease, and we should begin today! The following tips for preventing Alzheimer's Disease will do more than just prevent the disease, they'll also improve your memory, strengthen your mind, and as a bonus, improve your overall health (especially your heart's health):

 Eat more fruits and vegetables

Drink 5 or more cups of coffee daily

Work crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and other mentally challenging puzzles

Get plenty of Omega 3's - take a supplement if you don't have enough fish in your diet

Learn ways to handle stress and anxiety

Get plenty of restful, healing sleep

Have as many social interactions as possible

Learn new things on a regular basis

Get at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day

Eat more turkey, fish, and chicken and less pork and red meat

The correlation between good heart health and good mental health is astounding. It would appear that what is good for one is good for the other. What's more, what's bad for one is also bad for the other. When we eat right, exercise, and manage our stress and anxiety, we benefit our hearts as well as our minds.

Stretching your mind each day is pivotal to good mental health as well as Alzheimer's prevention. However, don't fall into a mental rut. Your goal should be to work DIFFERENT mentally challenging puzzles each day, not the same types of puzzles over and over again. Also, if you read, for example, historical fiction, you're doing a wonderful thing for your mind. Reading is extremely beneficial! However, your brain will respond much more strongly to a variety of book subjects. Keep reading your favorite types of books, but add unexpected subjects to keep your brain challenged.

When you challenge your mind by giving it something it isn't expecting, it seemingly begins to fire on all cylinders. The brain craves challenges and excitement. When we keep feeding it the same thing over and over, it gets into a rut and this creates the perfect environment for memory loss, weakened mental abilities, and worse. Read about a wide variety of subjects and from many different types of books and magazines. If you normally read fiction, add more non-fiction to the mix.
It's all about keeping your brain fired up and staying mentally active.

Another bit of advice is this: Don't fixate on Alzheimer's Disease or Preventing memory loss or dementia. Focus, instead, on the positive - becoming mentally strong and improving your memory. Each day, think about strengthening your brain and giving your mind a great workout. Focus on the positive effects and don't think about what "could" happen or the things that you fear. Don't invite the negative things into your presence. Lock them out! Tell yourself each day that you're growing stronger mentally and improving your memory as you improve your health!
