The Hidden Benefits of Learning Something New
by: TMFC (Joi)
I’ve always been a strong believer in learning new things, and doing so just as often as your psyche will tolerate it. Not only does it boost your confidence and self esteem, it also stimulates your brain cells - which is always, always, always a very good thing.
Below are a few of the funnest, most rewarding ways to sharpen your mind and keep life interesting:
- Learn a new language. There are countless books, websites and software products to help you. Start now and you'll be amazing yourself a year from now.
- Take up a new game or hobby. Always wanted to play golf? Get swinging!
- Take a "mental walk" in a direction you've never taken before. Familiarize yourself with Dreamology or Chinese Astrology.
- Take a computer class.
- Get a hot new camera and take up photography. Not only is it incredibly fun, it allows you to see the world in a fresh new way.
When you learn something new, you do more than just stretch your mind and broaden your world. We now know that learning something new does wonders for our emotional well-being. A report written by an anthropologist at Rutger’s University (Helen Fisher, PhD) points out that learning something new boosts brain levels of dopamine, which increases feelings of pleasure.
The next time you’re faced with learning a new skill, say “My pleasure.” It really will be, you know!
