Don't you think it sometimes helps to read about others who are living examples of the power of positive thinking? Azeem Kayum is one such person: born with a nearly severed spinal cord and with mental challenges as a result, he shows how mentally challenged people can still achieve great things. His book really showers the power of the human spirit, especially when coupled with his own perseverence and family support. SO inspiring!

Nancy - wonderful idea! Affirmations and positive thinking make a whole world of difference. I, too, have seen it first hand. It makes you want to go up to everyone you see and ask them about their thoughts - whether they're positive or negative.

If the negative Nellys of the world just realized how different their life could be... Maybe if we just keep teaching and preaching about the power of affirmations, word will trinkle down the line to them!

Tamar, that sounds like a fascinating book - and very timely. Our youth needs JUST this sort of thing right now.

Thanks for sharing and I love your "Hawk" analogy. Great stuff!

Hi Joi! Love your article on affirmations. One of the biggest challenges I had regarding affirmations was remembering them when I needed them the most. As well, I wanted affirmations that meant something to me personally. So I typed them on coloured paper, laminated and cut them. I had them everywhere. They would be in my handbag, in my car, in dresser drawers, stuck on the refrigerator door and so on. They were 'in my face' so to speak and this was so effective for me, particularly in the early days when learning about affirmations.
Affirmations helped me change the way I spoke. I make mention of affirmations in my book.

Another way of thinking of this is that hawks don't waste their time on small prey (right?). So, in the same way, we don't want to waste our time being dragged in or down by negative thoughts. It is human nature to have negative thoughts we don't have a choice about that, but we can choose how much attention we pay to those thoughts, how much we value them etc.

This is actually the subject of my new book, Freeing Your Child from Negative Thinking: Powerful, Practical Strategies to Build a Lifetime of Resilience, Flexibility and Happiness. If we start kids at a young age learning the skills of managing their negative thoughts, so much suffering can be avoided. If you'd like to look at an excerpt, please check out www.freeingyourchild.com.
