Vintage CorvetteI was going back and forth, having a great conversation, with someone through e-mail recently about Thinking Outside of the Box.  Yes, it’s a phrase that has been around the bend a few hundred thousand times, but like vintage corvettes – it’s still a beautiful ride.

Both of us were totally on board.  Come on, if people had never thought outside of confining boundaries (whether self imposed or not), we wouldn’t have the luxuries we enjoy today.  People who stay inside of expectations and never color outside of the lines (even for effect), aren’t the trail blazers, inventors, or lightning bolts of the world.   They never give the world a fresh breath because they never take one themselves.

Our conversation even prompted me to begin writing an article on the subject.  I filled my coffee cup and checked my e-mail one final time before I started writing.  The story below came floating through the inbox on the wings of irony.  I thought, “Hmm, nothing I could have written would have been better PR for Thinking Outside of the Box than this is, so…”  You guessed it, my coffee cup and I decided to print the story.  Enjoy!

The Right Answer

You are driving down the road in your Corvette on a wild, stormy night, when you pass by a bus stop and you see three people waiting for the bus:

  1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.
  2. An old friend who once saved your life.
  3. The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.

Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing that there could only be one passenger in your Corvette? Think before you continue reading.

This is a moral/ethical dilemma that was once actually used as part of a job application. You could pick up the old lady, because she is going to die, and thus you should save her first. Or you could take the old friend because he once saved your life, and this would be the perfect chance to pay him back. However, you may never be able to find your perfect mate again.

YOU WON’T BELIEVE THIS……. The candidate who was hired (out of 200 applicants) had no trouble coming up with his answer. He simply answered: ‘I would give the car keys to my old friend and let him take the lady to the hospital. I would stay behind and wait for the bus with the partner of my dreams.’ Sometimes, we gain more if we are able to give up our stubborn thought limitations. Never forget to ‘Think Outside of the Box.’

Apparently, for those of us who aren’t in the big 50′s neighborhood yet, we needn’t fret the view. The following is a list that was published in a really cool book from 2001 titled “Lists to Live By.” It’s a collection of reasons why “Older is Better” by individuals over 50 years old. It seems strange to refer to 50 as older these days, doesn’t it?!

50′s the new 40 after all – and that’s nowhere near old.

Be that as it may, I love the attitude and vibe of this list. It’s crackling with positive energy and that always turns me all the way on.

Why Older is Better

  1. You appreciate one day at a time.
  2. More people open doors for you.
  3. You don’t have to prove yourself.
  4. The simple pleasures seem so much more valuable.
  5. It’s okay to foget.
  6. You can go at your own pace.
  7. You have more stories to tell.
  8. There’s nothing left to learn the hard way.
  9. You have time to volunteer.
  10. You get to be a grandparent.
  11. You get senior discounts.
  12. You’ve seen it all before, even if you don’t remember where!
  13. You can stay up as long as you want.
  14. You discover the value of the things that have been around a while – old friends, old books, old memories, and old songs.
  15. You finally have perspective.
  16. Things take longer, but you have more time to do them.
  17. You have a better chance of shooting your age with your golf score.
  18. You have seen so many prayers answered.
  19. You know that being kind is often more important than being right.
  20. You finally have the time to start a new hobby or read a new book.
  21. You have learned that people are much more important than things.
  22. You don’t have to worry about what to do when you grow up.
  23. You now how important it is to count your blessings.
  24. You can take as many naps as you like.
  25. Heaven is closer.
  26. You have real wisdom to share.
  27. You realize that time is a treasure.
  28. You have learned that great memories come from both hard times and good times.
  29. It’s the perfect time for looking inward, outward, forward, and upward.
  30. You finally realize that what you can’t see lasts longer than what you can.

The following was included in an e-mail I recently received. Unfortunately, I don’t have any idea whatsoever who wrote it. It’s too good not to pass along, though.

WHAT WE CAN ALL LEARN FROM DOGS:

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

  • When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
  • Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
  • Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.
  • Take naps.
  • Stretch before rising.
  • Run, romp, and play daily.
  • Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
  • Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
  • On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
  • On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
  • When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
  • Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
  • Be loyal.
  • Never pretend to be something you’re not.
  • If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
  • When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.
  • ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY!

You know how I sign all of my posts on this blog? – Dogs take it to heart. It’s time we started letting ourselves go to the dogs!

An exciting fender bender has happened on the information highway.  One of my favorite magazines, Psychology Today, has bumped into the community of Blogging.  The result is positively traffic-stopping!

As the magazine editor, Kaja Perina, writes in her column (June 2008 issue):

Imagine a gathering where relationship gurus, experimental psychologists, and renowned writers drop by for frequent chats – and urge you to join the conversation.  They ponder whether it’s possible to love two people at once, extol Beavis and Butt-head’s unwitting grasp of human nature, and challenge you to whittle your life story down to six words.  And that’s just before appetizers.

If that sounds as intriguing to you as it does to me, I’ll see you there!

No Parking - Get Moving! We’re all familiar with endorphins and with the fact that exercising gives us a great feeling from our heads to our toes.  Working out – whether it’s walking, jogging, gardening, pilates, yoga, or just cleaning the heck out of our house – makes us feel giddy to be alive!  Add that to the health benefits of exercise and we should get our rears in gear a lot more often than we do.

But there’s more.

Something the experts refer to as “Postexercise Euphoria” seems to be the result of naturally occurring cannabinoids – from the family of chemicals that gives marijuana smokers their buzz.  A study reported in Prevention Magazine gave the following details:

Researchers asked 24 men to run, ride a bike, or sit for 50 minutes.  After the 50 minutes, the researchers took the men’s blood samples.  They found high blood levels of the cannabinoid anandamide in the exercisers but not in the sedentary men.

They say that you need at least 20 minutes of aerobic effort to feel the effects of this mood lifting boost, so don’t expect a 10 minute walk to do much for your spirits.  While it’s better than nothing, a 20 minute walk would be a much better workout as well as a much higher lift.

This is just more proof that if you’re down in the dumps, you don’t have to stay there – unless you want to.

Take a Look!I have a great post I’d like to throw your way.  The title is Relax: 50+ Simple 30-Second Ways to Bring Tranquility To Your Life and it’s a really wonderful compilation of things you can do to bring more peace to your world.  Read each one and, when there’s a link – check it out.  Utilizing this link and the information provided will be one of the smartest things you do this week.

DetourOne more detour:  I wrote a book review yesterday on Self Help Daily for Maria Shriver’s wonderful new book, “Just Who Will You Be?” You should read the review, but more importantly, you should read the book.  Irregardless of your age, career, fame or fortune – this is an amazing little book that’ll leave a big impact on your world if you’ll give it the chance.

Do It Anyway: Finding Personal Meaning and Deep Happiness by Living the Paradoxical Commandments
I just finished reading a really wonderful book;  in fact, I just wrote a book review for it on Self Help Daily.

The title of the book is Do It Anyway: Finding Personal Meaning and Deep Happiness by Living the Paradoxical Commandments. It was written by Dr. Keith M. Kent as a guide to his famous Paradoxical Commandments. You can find these in the post linked above as well. I’m sure you’ve seen them before, but a refresher course is always a good idea when the material’s this good.
