Sadly, the new movie “Away From Her” is an accurate portrayal of Alzheimer’s Disease. The hell that you see the characters go through is all to real for those who live within the walls of this hateful disease.
USA Today recently did a great write-up about the parallels between fact and fiction when it comes to the new movie. Several details were revealed about what the families go through that I’d never heard before – and, frankly, wish I didn’t know about now. It’s a helpless feeling to know that people suffer this sort of anguish and heartache and there’s nothing you can do about it. Except, I guess, keep spreading the word and trying to keep the disease in the mainstream – keep people talking and thinking enough about it, so something can hopefully be done to help the millions who suffer today and who will suffer tomorrow.
Facts About Alzheimer’s Disease
1. More than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s Disease.
2. 1 in 8 people 65 and older have Alheimer’s. Nearly half of those over 85 do.
3. An estimated 7.7 million will have Alzheimer’s disease by 2030 and 16 million by 2050 unless medicine finds a way to stop it.
